YMT Logan’s Youth Management Team (YMT) is a friendly group of young people interested in making a difference in their community. We meet every Friday from 3.45 to 4.45 with afternoon tea provided. Membership is open to young people aged between 13 and 18. YMT is about having fun and helping others. Last year we went to Dreamworld, we went horse-riding on the Sunshine Coast, we went camping, ten pin bowling, ate pizza and went canoeing out near Esk; we went creeking, climbed high-ropes, built rafts, ran discos, had parties and gave away presents. We also raised $1000 to purchase mosquito nets for a village in Papua New Guinea to help them with the threat of malaria. This year we are looking to do bigger and better things for our community and our world. We also have a free camp planned for a weekend in April where we will get together with other YMT’ers from Beenleigh and Carindale. While all this is happening you are becoming a leader of the future. Every young person has leadership abilities – high-quality leaders are made rather than born to it and YMT is specially designed around creating great leaders. As a member of YMT you may be offered the chance to attend a State Youth Leadership Program (SYLP) camp. These are a free five day camps held during the school holidays combining indoor workshop sessions with outdoor recreation activities to develop a range of skills, knowledge and abilities. There are three levels to the State Youth Leadership Program 1. Level 1 (leading me) 2. Level 2 (leading others) 3. Level 3 (leadership in action) The friendships you make at SYLP may last a lifetime.
YMT’ers get free club membership and are sponsored into a club activity for free. Want more from your life . . . ? Want fun . . . ? Want to make a difference? . . . Youth ProgramsGirls With A Purpose Logan PCYC is the first PCYC in Queensland to implement a new program specifically targeting 14 to 15 year old girls with low self esteem issues. Called “Girls With A Purpose”, Topics covered included self-esteem, anger management, effective communication, problem solving and relationship building skills, as well as dealing with various issues facing this age group. Also included were two challenge rewards of indoor rock climbing in week 2 and a Story Bridge climb in week 11. Responses from the girls in the first program have simply been amazing and very inspiring. Schools already have girls asking to be part of the program in 2009 and as a result we will be conducting “Girls With A Purpose” each term in 2009. Some unedited thoughts about the program written by the girls included – “Hey guys, I must say, this program has been AWESOME!!! A really great experience, so keep up the good work, OK? Thankyou sooo much!!! You have been a great help”. “Hey-yyy ! ! Thaaaannkksss for ‘EVERYTHING’ yous have been a huuuuge help made us more confident to be ourselves. THANKYOUUUUU SOOOOO MUCH ! Love yooh’s much ! Support & Strengthening Program The Support and Strengthening Project is a sport and recreation based program for young people aged between nine and fourteen, who are displaying anti-social behaviour and are disengaged, or at significant risk of disengaging from mainstream school. Activities aim to build resilience, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution and social competencies that will enable students to reengage in learning opportunities and enhance living skills.
With 40 participants each term, the program is divided into eight sessions per week with students placed in a group of five participants. Each session will run for 2 hours with each student attending just one session per week.
